Which personal traits should a #SQLPASS Director have?

,

A lot has been said about what each candidate would like to do and their track record of delivering in the past. Every candidate has an impressive list of references, you can read mine here. The problem with stating our goals now is it is not like a pledge made by political parties during their election campaigns. When elected in office the successful candidates will be assigned portfolios (albeit with their consultation) at that point your goals from your campaign may not align with the required goals for your given portfolio.

Now what happens?

if this happens what happens to your goals, your dreams? The goals and dreams that PASS members voted on may have gone out of the window. At this point you need to know what personal traits the candidates have in order to turn their hands to whatever tasks they are given. Tasks they may not have expected but your votes have elected them to do.

Stop and think

Before casting your votes take the time to read each candidates application form. Now stop, remove the aspect where they talk about their goals and delve into how they have written it, what has determined them to write these goals, what can you gleam about their personal traits from this document. Now do the same thing from their blog, facebook page etc. etc. How do they think? What does their writing tell you about them?

Do these traits tally up with those that you think a Director should have? Make a matrix and cross them off.

My personal traits

I’m not going to sit here and type all of the usual things that you see on LinkedIn about being honest, trustworthy etc. etc. All candidates have been vetted by a very talented Nominations Committee.
Instead I am going to refer to a book that a former mentor suggested “StrengthsFinder 2.0″ by Tom Rath. The concept is that you should concentrate on those key strengths that you are good at as they will energize you and make you more productive. The book came with a code that allows you to take an online assessment. The rest of this post contains extracts from my personal report that was generated from this online assessment.

Your Personalized Strengths Insights

What makes you stand out?

Driven by your talents, you concentrate for extended periods of time. This is one reason why you ultimately master skills and grasp concepts. Chances are good that you prefer having quiet time to mull over ideas as well as read and examine interesting topics. Periods of uninterrupted thinking give you great pleasure. You probably excuse yourself from noisy, active, or distracting situations to thoroughly process your ideas. Instinctively, you may prefer to enroll in demanding classes. Perhaps you thrive in situations where you can test your talents or your endurance to discover how much you can accomplish. You may need to “prove yourself to yourself” every now and then. Because of your strengths, you are a rational thinker. That is, you exhibit good judgment and exercise sound reasoning. These thought processes serve you well whenever you set out to acquire true knowledge and/or gain a skill. You school yourself by reading, investigating, examining, experiencing, or receiving instruction in a subject. By nature, you choose to spend each week working toward clearly defined goals. When you have performance targets, you are more methodical about gathering information, data, facts, or evidence.

Focus

Shared Theme Description

People who are especially talented in the Focus theme can take a direction, follow through, and make the corrections necessary to stay on track. They prioritize, then act.

Your Personalized Strengths Insights

What makes you stand out?

Because of your strengths, you genuinely appreciate forward-looking thinkers who help you envision the future. They usually inspire you to outline the tasks and list the deadlines for reaching each of your goals. Having a plan to follow improves your chances of accomplishing what you desire in the coming months, years, or decades. Instinctively, you yearn to get ahead. You strive to acquire many of the status symbols and special privileges that come with rank, title, or position. It’s very likely that you desire to dictate the circumstances of your existence. You refuse to be a victim. You aim to leave your mark on the world. Although you want to be in charge of everything, you realize this is unrealistic. Why? You sense you are somehow linked to every human being on the planet. Whatever you choose to do or not do affects them. Their choices eventually affect you. You walk a tightrope between needing to manage every part of your life and knowing this is impossible. Chances are good that you may be especially inclined to seek facts before you make decisions. Perhaps you pride yourself on being level-headed, and on rarely being influenced by people who make unsupported emotional pleas. If faced with a gut-wrenching decision, you might pause to double check that your reasoning is sound. Sometimes you carefully evaluate measurements and examine the accuracy of calculations. By nature, you enjoy informing others about the direction you are headed. This is one reason why you usually document the steps, timelines, or deadlines you need to honor in the coming weeks, months, years, or decades.

Futuristic

Shared Theme Description

People who are especially talented in the Futuristic theme are inspired by the future and what

could be. They inspire others with their visions of the future.

Your Personalized Strengths Insights

What makes you stand out?

Driven by your talents, you are enthusiastic about the future because visionaries describe it so clearly. Their ideas for products, medicines, or inventions generally increase your  determination to do whatever you can to breathe life into their dreams. Chances are good that you look to the future rather than review what has already occurred in your life. You see little reason to cling to the past. The future is full of potential. You set your sights on being accomplished and successful. By nature, you intentionally take steps to be the mastermind of your own future. You refuse to leave your destiny to chance. You probably resist placing it in someone else’s hands. You trust your own intelligence and imagination when setting a direction for your life. Because of your strengths, you treasure the one-on-one conversations you have with visionary thinkers. Their ideas can force you to expand on your plans for the future. Instinctively, you sharpen your ideas about the future by spending time with possibility thinkers. These individuals regularly talk about inventions, medicines, designs, technologies, or food supplies that no one else has even considered.

Analytical

Shared Theme Description

People who are especially talented in the Analytical theme search for reasons and causes. They have the ability to think about all the factors that might affect a situation.

Your Personalized Strengths Insights

What makes you stand out?

It’s very likely that you normally approach your work, studies, and other endeavors with common sense and a level head. Your ability to make reasonable plans and exercise good judgment means you produce good results time after time. Driven by your talents, you may prefer to do your work in a methodical manner. Perhaps you create an orderly flow from one step of a project to the next. Sometimes this ensures each task receives your undivided attention once you identify your top priorities. To some degree, you want to eliminate troublesome distractions. You might realize these can break your concentration and slow your progress. Because of your strengths, you intentionally acquire knowledge in areas that are foreign to you. As long as your studies contain rational and reasonable information, you are likely to delve into them. Chances are good that you use precise, well-documented data to guide your thinking and dictate what you do. You refuse to rely on hearsay, unnamed sources, or abridged — that is, short summaries of — books, published articles, scholarly research, or

historic records. Instinctively, you are well aware of the many elements impacting a group of people, a project, a process, a deal, or a proposal. Typically you examine all the facts to predict possible outcomes or consequences. You probably produce reasonable explanations for why things do and do not happen.

Ideation

Shared Theme Description

People who are especially talented in the Ideation theme are fascinated by ideas. They are able to find connections between seemingly disparate phenomena.

Your Personalized Strengths Insights

What makes you stand out?

Because of your strengths, you usually are the group member who creates fresh approaches for dealing with various activities. Often you are inspired to invent new methods for performing tasks, reaching goals, operating processes, distributing goods, or increasing production. You probably have proposed original thoughts for collecting materials, handling complaints, organizing events, raising funds, or completing assignments. By nature, you ask questions. You ponder answers. You find the underlying causes of a situation, problem, system, mechanism, plan, regulation, or prohibition. Logical and ordered in your thinking, you study every detail, however small. You are determined to examine the facts. It’s very likely that you traditionally figure out what you need to do better by evaluating data, evidence, or facts. Instinctively, you now and then take advantage of opportunities that allow you to generate original ideas.

This is just the first section of the report the second section suggests action points to take. I have listed one of the action points below as it is rather apt:

Choose work in which you are paid to analyze data, find patterns, or organize ideas. For example, you might excel in marketing, financial, or medical research or in database management, editing, or risk management.

Thank you for reading this far and I hope that you agree the traits listed here would make me an excellent PASS Board Director. You can read more about my candidacy here.
