WAN Optimization Evaluation Review–Part 1

,

We are evaluating a WAN optimization vendor and have so far installed the appliance at the primary site and end-user’s home computer.  We will have to install another appliance to the DR site which will happen today or tomorrow.  So far from the management console, it looks promising.

Since yesterday afternoon, the appliances have optimized bandwidth by 3x and the reduced SQL traffic by about 90% (total data reduction is 68%).  CPU utilization is about 8-12% on the appliance.  There is a port where data actually increased which isn’t good and it consists of about 24% of the total traffic (since yesterday afternoon).

The real test (in my eyes) will be when the third appliance is installed on the DR site where database mirroring, SAN replication, and backup file transfers occur.  I’m looking forward to seeing the results after a few days worth of performance metrics gathered once the third appliance is installed.
