Future of Database Mirroring

,

One of the beloved feature of SQL server standard edition for HA is database mirroring, since you only have 2-node cluster or mirroring to choose from and this is the only option that does not require a share disk. But sadly, from SQL 2012 onward, that feature is mark for deprecated, meaning it will no long be supported in the next version of SQL.

However, you can still use it in SQL 2014, but with all the new feature in availability groups and most of the things to targeted to enterprise edition, it does worthwhile to consider moving to enterprise if you can.

If your shop is not that big and the transaction volume is not huge, not to mention budget is limited, you might be stuck with standard edition of SQL and worry about losing database mirroring later on. I got some good news for you, as in the last Microsoft event, I discuss the very same topic with one of the guys in SQL team, they mention that in the next version of SQL (SQL vNext), there will be a matching feature to replace database mirroring in standard edition. However, the function will be limited (most likely for 2 node as well), they do not disclose much beyond that, but one should assume that it should have full availability groups feature but limited to 2 node only. It might also only allow sync mode like DB mirroring now in standard edition. If that is the case, it will make DBA life easier since we no longer require to setup database mirror for each database and we can have one group to cater them all. Hopefully we can setup different group to separate the databases as well.

Since there aren't much info yet, will try to update everyone when I hear any news for this, this should be something we should look out for and it will be the very end of database mirroring once its out.
