Blog Post

Database Superhero Adventures, January 2018 Edition

,

Just in case you missed it I wrote a blog post for Idera on creating PowerShell module using Plaster you can find it here.  It simplifies an earlier blog post I wrote and the same subject with some information I learned from Rob Sewell.

This month I have one upcoming event and that is SQL Saturday Nashville. I will be giving my talk on Query Store.  See more about SQL Saturday Nashville here. Oh and let’s use my favorite logo I’ve them use see the one with the Christmas hat.

This month my volunteer work with the NC Guardian ad Litem program will be a little lighter as I only have three cases and no court dates.  One of kids age of the system so now we can just be friends instead of having a professional relationship. Hopefully, we will be able to stay in touch and can follow how they do in life.  But I that just means I can just spend more times with children.  Which is always more fun.

I’m helping organize SQL Saturday Raleigh.  Come speak or attend if you are able. Follow our official Twitter account to keep up with all the latest news at here.  So far I have submitted several SQL Saturdays, this year I have put in a couple of runs no more than two SQL Saturdays a month and no more than two in a row, it will help my son be less panicky about mom not being home. I submitted to Nashville, Cleveland, Tampa, Chicago, Richmond, Raleigh (well not yet), Philadelphia, Dallas, Pensacola (but I have to check when my brother’s high school graduation is), Chattanooga, Louisville, and Columbus.  I have a new presentation for Collecting Performance Metrics that I could probably use a catcher title for so anybody wants to look at the abstract check out my Presentations page and let know about it or the abstract that I would like to present as much as possible this year.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading including Lead with a Story, Crucial Conversations, Your Best Year Ever, Rest, and Steal the Show.  My favorite being Your Best Year Ever because it focuses on setting goals, a good book to read before that book is Living Forward.  After having created a life plan from the advice in Living Forward two years ago the Your Best Year Ever helped me do a better job of setting goals towards my life plan.  I wonder from Rest how to tell my boss I need a sabbatical, how many relevant stories I can work into presentations, and what I can use from Steal the Story to be a better presenter. I’m still reviewing my notes on the books and working on action steps. Crucial Conversations will probably help me more with dealing with relatives.

Since I talked about goals and a life plan I’ll share some of my goals for the new year even though I hear it’s not good to do that, I’m not worried I’ll still work towards my goals whether people know about them or not:

  • Lose 40 lbs
  • Read the Bible through in a year
  • Create new presentation for performance metrics and one other as well possibly on Linux
  • Get Linux certification (best way I know to learn something new)
  • Get out of debt
  • Write on my blog twice a month and write for Idera twice a month
  • Read two books a month
  • Work on providing Linux content virtually

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone has a great year and learns a lot about SQL Server and any other technology they need for their job.  No for a shameless plug a book I contributed to comes out in February so check it out SQL Server 2017 Administration Inside Out.
