The Vision Series

Introduction

I ran across this series at C:Net recently and thought it would be interesting to our readers. It's not SQL Server Specific, but SQL Server is mentioned. A few memorable highlights.

Melvin Taub, of Citigroup mentions SQL Server with this quote:If we choose a platform, we're choosing it because we're confident that we're going to be able to deliver on that platform...That's why we don't have any very large databases on (Microsoft's) SQL Server (software) right now. It hasn't been proven. Not to say it can't do it. We just haven't seen the proof.

I'm not disagreeing and this is not just Microsoft, but no one really puts out good solid technical proof that they can deliver a solution. I know DELL says they use SQL Server, but how? In what capacity? With what metrics? I've seen the same from other vendors when I've tried to find proof for recommending a solution. Not that TPC numbers aren't nice, but my business doesn't run on TPC systems.

Kathy White, Cardinal Health:

Q:What's been your biggest disappointment with Web-based technologies?

A:...In fact, many of our vendors solved one standalone problem, but they don't tend to look holistically at their customers.

I think this is true (and why many of us are employed).

James Buczkowski, Ford Motor

Q:How are you developing the Web services you're using now? Java? .Net?

A:We have a combination. We're using (Java and .Net) for internal applications and making information available to suppliers.

Nice to see there's room for both.

Tony Scott, General Motors

Q:What's your biggest tech nightmare?

A:My biggest tech nightmare right now is security.

And it should be most peoples. Get this right first!
