Try setting up a DSN using Windows authentication and have someone who can not login to the database with Windows authentication use the DSN.

Wouldn't it also make a difference who ran the query? If the dba was running it from his machine how about using sp_helpprotect?

Try something like this,
SELECT *
FROM AS400LinkedServerName.AS400DatabaseName.AS400Library.AS400FileName
You can use the WRKRDBDIRE command to get the AS/400 database name.
