You'll have to explain more. What do you mean by updateable with filters?
I assume filters mean that you are producing a publication that joins data from two or more tables...

The distributor is usually the issue. It must be equal to the publisher, so from 2008 -> 2005, you need a 2008 distributor.

Did you get any of the scripts from Chad's article working? Those show you how to connect to SQL Server and run something.
From there, you might look over this...

I would think that you aren't under memory pressure, but you'd have to look at more than this. Check target server memory, check the disk activity for how pressured it...
