I hate centralized systems. That creates a single point of failure that depends on lots of stuff (Security, networking, etc.) working correctly.

If you're updating, then why not put the UPDATE in the trigger? Something like this:
ALTER TRIGGER [dbo].[tr_datediff] ON [dbo][JOURNAL] FOR INSERT,UPDATE
AS
Update mytable
set mycol = DATEDIFF(d,start_date,end_date)[diff]

Are you sure this is SQL 2016 RTM media? Have you used it elsewhere to install?
I haven't tried upgrading a 2014 instance, and don't like in place upgrades....

Yep, the "self" doesn't seem to work. I created two users, one with DBOwner, one with sysadmin. Both created a proc that calls Bulk INSERT with AS SELF. Neither works....
