I'd build a table and have them insert a value in there. You can then check this table with some job that will run backups.

Profiler is really the only way out of the box. Lumigent has a product called Entegra that I believe can help as well.

the default trace should get all SQL events sent to the server. Is this SQL 2000? Did you enter any filters on the last tab?
