I think you're right, but that's why we have compatibility mode. If it's < 10 or 11, then allow them, but in new versions don't.

Does it fail interactively as well as during scheduled running?
When you say the connections work fine, can you preview your data from IBM in the Transfer task?

When do you get the internal consistency error? Perhaps you have a corrupt backup?

Have you done a try..catch around this? Not sure if it will help. RESTORE might be one of those functions where you can't necessarily trap the error.

I don't think there's a procedure, but why is a group a problem with your application? The application has no idea if it's a Windows login or group that maps...

The application log is typically the windows event log. You can configure the maint plan to write out a log for each task, such as the backup task.

I don't think you can reduce the size below it's initial size.
You can move the data by moving the clustered index if there are tables in there.
