Jack has great advice. I'd avoid GOTO if possible since it tends to lead to code that can be confusing and problematic to maintain.

The correct answer, according to that link, is a rowversion data type. This may be stored as binary(8), but there is a special type for it as well.

If you are running these backups out of sequence, use the COPY_ONLY command to prevent breaking the backup chain.
