How are you editing it? Did you open it in BIDS? IF you did, only BIDS can then edit it.
If not, then you might have some corruption with the install....

Are you scanning the mdf/ldf files with Symmantec? You should exclude all database files from scanning.

The char column cannot be 9000 bytes. You define the char column. It can be up to 8000 bytes.
If you try to put more in, it is truncated.
