I thought it was a neat question.

Yes, I also thought the question was definitely easier once I figured out VCS was "version control system" and not Veritas Cluster Server. :crazy:

Paul Randal has a blog post about doing a tail backup of the log for a database that can't/won't come on-line.
He does a bit fo shuffling to back it up...

Hmph. Since the question asked how to remove the filegroup from the database, I didn't consider dropping the database a viable option.
