Can you get them to change the column delimiter to a pipe (|) as part of that? It might just solve these issues.

A better (and easier!) idea might be to compare the execution plans for the two queries.

So ... what's so special about that one column?

The 'tools' you refer to do not necessarily require anything to be installed on a server - just your client machine...
