Why do you need the nolock?? That data is persisted so the nolock shouldn't really matter, or does it?

Start a trace with only the grow (and shrink) events.
You can setup a job to run start a serverside trace to run for 24 hours, and run that job daily.

That's actually the way to go.
Log the db size regularly, then project the db size 1-2 years down the road and resize accordingly. Constant auto-grow has nasty effects on...

2 things : 1 the optimizer must assume that the parameters will change. Maybe it tries to figure out the best plan for the normal or worst case scenarios......

Well then, what is your fully tested method of operation in those cases. Take a good guess, then go with 25 times more data then adjust as need be...
