My recommendation would be to learn the database engine inside and out along with everything you can get your hands on for T-SQL programming. I can't speak for others...

There are only two valid ways to kill a stuck xp_CmdShell call. One is to bounce the whole server, not just the SQL Service. Obviously, that's even worse...

Same error when using a linked server.Odd that SSIS (using a DTS connection string) works but SSMS doesn't. Both are using "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0", too.
