I think that ultimately learning a topic falls on the individuals shoulders. Even if the company pays for training, they can't ensure that training will sink into that individuals...

Sounds like a process went berzerk on you. Check your transaction log and recovery model settings. Also check your jobs and processes to see if there is anything...

I like a couple of comments made about the tiered storage.
1) You should understand and know your data and data access patterns
2) Get to know the DMVs

We worked on databases completely housed in SQL 2000 at the time that managed all of UPS shipping.
I think if the NSA used strictly SQL server for all of those...
