I wouldn't say that TDE isn't user friendly.

I would say that you should have a firm grasp on it and why you are doing it before doing it.

So, the first question I have is:

Do you have a ton of free space inside the database now?

Did you check for any "maintenance" jobs that might have run overnight?...
