Have you navigated to the right folder before running sqlcmd? I just tested it in the wrong location and got that error message.

Yes, you will be fine.
You only need one though, you can manage SQL Server 2008R2 perfectly with SSMS 2012.

Normally I'd say do this;
The place you want to copy the log backups to; right-click on the folder > Properties > Security and see if the Service Account has permissions...

1) is there anything in the error log?
2) Does the Service Account have permission to write to the destination folder?
