Installing Management Studio 2012 with SQL Server

  • Hi Everyone,

I have just successfully installed MS SQL Server 2008 R2 onto my Windows 7 (Professional - x64) computer. I would now like to install the 2012 version of SQL Server Management Studio. However I am concerned that I may break my current installation by doing so...

Here is what I believe I should be clicking on!

Am I on the right track here or do I need to tick all the boxes?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    David

  • Unfortunately I can't see the screenshots (probably blocked by firewall), but I have installed multiple versions of SQL Server side by side without an issue.

It should be no problem to install SSMS 2008R2 and SSMS 2012 on the same machine.

You only need one though, you can manage SQL Server 2008R2 perfectly with SSMS 2012.

  • Yes, you will be fine.

    That too.

  • The exception is if you are trying to manage SSAS through SSMS. I have found it requires the same version of SSMS as the version of SSAS.

I logged in with SSMS 2014 into SSAS 2012 MD/Tabular without any issues.

  • I have never been able to open SSAS 2008 with SSMS 2012.
