Who is Using CAGs?

  • Hi Steve

I've just rolled out CAGs across 4 servers for a manufacturing client as part of a business continuity architecture.  They are relatively easy to setup.  The security boundary takes some getting use to as you have the same logins at the instance and CAG level. Same applies to Database Mail profiles and linked servers.

  • Glad to hear it. I think they are easy, but that security boundary and "getting use" should be GETTING USED TO. People mess that up, especially in teams

  • Hi Steve

I've just completed an upgrade to SQL 2022 for my client and one of my next projects will be to investigate using CAGs.  They have a lot of SQL Agent jobs that currently live on more than one server and being able to rationalise and centralise them would be of huge benefit.

However, a lot of the jobs run SSIS packages, and the SQL Server documentation for CAGs includes the unhelpfully non-specific statement, "Using SSIS packages, including maintenance plans, isn't supported with contained availability groups."  I haven't been able to find any more helpful information so one of my first tasks will be to do some testing to try and figure out exactly what works and what doesn't.

At the moment the SSIS catalog db is in an AG, so it's possible that's the thing that won't work if I try to migrate it to a CAG.

Just wondering if you or anyone else using CAGs had any experience of running SSIS from SQL Agent within a CAG, or advice on any pitfalls or gotchas around SSIS and CAGs more generally.

  • Haven't heard about that working or not working, but I do think SSIS is a place where many people get nervous about a CAG.
