If you ask me, people do not thank their DBAs enough. General rule is, that if the system is running well, then everything is quiet, no one makes comments. But as soon as the system slows down or users don't get their resultsets, the DBA is the first one to look at.
And then again, after the problem is fixed, no one takes a second to thank the DBA.
Here is why I created an eCard, which thanks the DBA[/url] (well, in this case it thanks for an index). 😀

I get thanked though the pay check. It's my job to make things run smoothly, so there is no need for people to thank me additionally for doing my job. But of course, I appreciate positive feedback.

What I know from experience is, that the easiest way to motivate someone is to acknowledge that they are doing great work. Hence, for the same salary the DBA can achieve much more due to his positive motivation. Right? 🙂

I totally agree that salary is not the only motivation to stay in a job. Positive feedback is as much important as the pay check.

Absolutely agree. Positive feedback goes a long way.

I vote for both, salary & positive feedback!
I think some of you (DBAs) do not have idea how you will feel yourself if you as a very good DBA are in the same position (with salary) with beginner employee (secondary school, no trainings, no experience at all, non-IT person). - really it's unacceptable!!! :w00t:

Very nice idea.
It's not often we get positive feedback, but it can really help.

Yea, no one thanks us when things go well.
Production server lost connection with the SAN today, mirror failover to secondary server, everything good. Primary server was down for an hour, so about 200 man hours NOT LOST due to forward thinking DBA! A nice note to leave this employer on I think!.

If you like ....
what you do ...
who you work for ...
and
who you work with ...
compensation more than just your pay is just a plain bonus !
(although it is nice)
