SSMS 22 Latest Update Crashing

  • Just had the misfortune of trying to update my SSMS 22.2 to 22.3 on my windows 11 work laptop today.

I was updating my SQL Prompt (SQLToolBelt installed), which enthusiastically announced I had to update my SSMS to version 22.3 in order for the new version of SQL Prompt to work.

    Ok.

🙁 New SSMS version freezing, crashing and then reloading whenever I tried to open a server connection, and basically became instantly unusable.

Contingency was switching back to one of my older SSMS's (of which I keep a few hanging around for these sorts of reasons), version 21 version, which actually felt faster and more responsive tbh.

It wouldn't suprise me if Microsoft's push for AI involvement in their codebase has more than a little to do with this outcome.

No doubt we'll find out soon enough.

  • I'd be fine with Redgate pushing new versions of SQL Prompt etc monthly instead of what seems every few days if it meant more time to get stable.

  • This wasn't a Prompt stability issue. Prompt releases every week, and you can delay updates.

However, Microsoft changed the version or name (can't remember) of some libraries that lots of add-ins use in SSMS. So they broke extensions from Redgate and others.
