i'm trying to analyses and simplifies the DBMS terminology to get a clear idea of it.
what "Platform" means in database terms?
what platforms do both ORACLE and SQL Server support and how ?

Platform is usually the OS a database server runs on. It's quite self-explaining that SQL Server runs only on Windows platforms, while Oracle supports some others, too.

Supportde Oracle 'platforms' off of the top of my head are:
Unix (Solaris, HP, AIX, and others)
Linux
Windows (NT4, 2000, ?2003?)
IBM Mainframe
