SQL Server 2012 - Express, 180 Day Evaluation, or Developer Edition?

    Hi Everyone,

    I recently made a post and got some good answers, but I wanted to repost a same topic to see if I can get it more clarified.

    As mentioned before I've decided to become a DBA and will be using SQL Server 2012 platform to learn. In regards to the subject line

    of this new topic; Express, 180 day evaluation, or the developer edition I wanted to know which of these 3 would be the best option for me.

    My biggest thing is making sure that I am able to learn every aspect of what SQL Server 2012 offers plus BI.

    I currently don't have MSDN access and neither from work. If I get the developer edition which is a trivial investment my question to that is how much of the developer edition can I really learn from it.

    Any feedback would be great.

    Buy a copy of Developer. It's basically the same as Enterprise, but the connections etc are limited. And it's super cheap for what you get.

    Express will have limited functionality.

    Evaluation and Developer will offer the same features as Enterprise edition. The problem with Evaluation would be the time constraint.

    How much can you learn from Developer Edition? That's up to you, you have all the features available. Theoretically, you could learn everything.

    +1 Go for developer.

    Express doesn't have all the BI functionalities.

    Thanks everyone for all your responses. This helps tremendously. Tomorrow I'm going to my first SQL User Group meeting. Topic involves Power BI. 🙂
