SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation to Standard on Windows 7 (Product Key issue)

  • Firstly, apologies for the length of the title. I tried to cram as much info in as I could as I couldn't find an answer when I searched for it.

Anyway, the issue I have is that I was trying out a piece of software for a client and in order to do this the client installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation edition on to my laptop. It was set-up under a second user account, with a second user group (I think) but the software still resided on my laptop using Windows 7.

This worked perfectly up until my evaluation version expired and I tried to upgrade using the product key I had acquired when purchasing the Standard edition. I now get a "Product Key invalid" message when I try upgrading using the SQL Server Installation Center Edition Upgrade and entering the Product Key received. I phoned microsoft who wouldn't help without charging but did tell me that the Product Key is definitely valid.

So, my question is, is my set-up of Windows 7 held only in a separate user account as opposed to Virtual environment compatible with SQL server 2008 R2 standard edition? If so, then does anyone have any ideas why I can't update the Product Key? If not, can anyone suggest a way to set-up the environment that will allow me to retain it on my laptop without seriously affecting the performance (it's a i7 SDD, so pretty quick)? The cleint software required the Standard version, hence why I didn't install on SQL express which would have been my preferred option.

    Any help is tremendously appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Rico.

Edit: just to say, in case you hadn't figured, I didn't set up the SQL evaluation config and I'm a wee bit amateur at anything beyond SQL queries. The chap who set it up is unavailable for help unfortunately.

  • Here's one possibility why it may not be working: MSDN Forum: enter a product key into a trial installation of sql server 2008 enterprise edition

If your Eval version is higher than what you have a license for, you won't be able to activate it with the key. You'll have to look at doing an uninstall / reinstall. *IF* you can get into SSMS and run a query, run "SELECT @@VERSION" to check what was installed.

If you can't get into SSMS, you can check in the error log files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321185 to get your version.

  • The evaluation version is the same as the enterprise edition. You will have to uninstall the evaluation edition and reinstall the standard edition.

  • Jason, Lynn thanks for your help. I wasn't sure what the evaluation was an evaluation of as I didn't install it myself. By moving from evaluation to standard I'm effectively down-grading the product, hence why my product key wouldn't work. Hmmm, oh well. Do you think, if I'm re-installing, doing this on a virtual machine would be a better option? Or is the way I had it set-up okay?

    Thanks again,

    Rico
