SQL 2005 STD on WIN2003R2 STD 4GB RAM

  • Hello all, (dont' kill the newbie)

This server has only one instance to take care

Allowing for fine tuning later, what is the best starting config for SQL 2005 STD on WIN2003R2 STD 4GB RAM?

Both in the boot.ini and management studio to get SQL to perform well?

(There way too many opinions to sort out.)

    - or is it this simple to start: ?

i hope this will help & make sense up to the extent.

4GB RAM: /3GB (AWE support is not used)

    8GB RAM: /3GB /PAE

    16GB RAM: /3GB /PAE

    16GB + RAM: /PAE

  • Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit Windows?

If you are running 32 bit Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition, it can only access 4 GB of RAM.

If you need more RAM, you would be better off using 64 bit Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition with 64 bit SQL Server.

  • Thanks for that input but I am not a believer in upgrades as fixes.

    Running 32 bit Windows

So I am still at my original question.

If you are running 32 bit Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition, it can only access 4 GB of RAM.

If you need more RAM, you would be better off using 64 bit Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition with 64 bit SQL Server.
