Hi,
Has anyone tried to use a DAT tape device connected locally via USB2 to do backup.
I am able to do backup of file system but SQL backup doesn't work.
I am aware that SQL server supports only local tape drives. I haven't found any info which interfaces are supported.

Hi Iztok,
I don't have any info as to which interfaces are supported for this sort of thing, but I do have a work around for you.
Instead of backup up from SQL directly to the tape you can do a backup to disk (assuming you have the space) and then use your backup software to take this to tape.
This way you also have a copy of the latest backup on disk which means the restore should be quicker if you need to do one.
If disk space is at a premium and you want to look at other options then you might also want to take a look at litespeed or SQL backup, as they allow you to compress backups so they take up less room.

I opened a case at Microsoft support. They haven't provided an official answer but it was at least something.
Microsoft doesn't say anywhere (docs, BOL)that USB Tape devices are supported or unsupported. Currently they are not able to explain why USB DAT device can't be used to do SQL backups. They would need to do many more tests to give an official answer. But this costs money......
I will have to use some workaround at the end.
