Are you sure the server is running? This is usually when you have typo'd the name or the server isn't running.

Hi, Steve,
I have very similar question. I have installed Visio Studio.net and SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2003 Server. I'm using mix mode of security for SQL Server. When I launched .net and try to connect to SQL Server, the same error '[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]Specified SQL Server not found.' came out. I then using ODBC to connect to SQL Server, it's successful. I then change the PC name of Windows Server 2003, it connected succesfully thru .net. I just wondering why is that?
