The secret(s) are:
If you have these 3 things, culture and policy be damned. So we work long and off hours, sometimes under real pressure. We get compensated in many ways. Flexible schedule, telecommuting, days off for the kids illnesses and the like. Even when we need that 'mental health day' (whether we actually tell our superiors that or not, I do). In my 23+ years there have been only 2 employers who did not realize the 'value' that was added to their organization by my skills and contributions. It was my choice, not theirs, to change the situation. In one case 2 1/2 years elapsed and in another case, the time spent was just under 8 months !
It's time for us and society to think in terms of moderation and develop an 'attitude' of 'gratitude' for what we presently have. If we want something different we can have it.
