Safe and Secure

  • The latest image on the Microsoft homepage says Safe and Secure, and is mainly linking to their spyware and malicious software tools. But supposedly that is a rallying cry for most of their products moving forward, including SQL Server.

As well it should be. I read about new attacks, bugs, etc. almost everyday and it's truly amazing how creative and determined some people are to break into your systems. I still think that software attacks by themselves on corporations are relatively rare, other than the incredibly annoying personal attacks, but they are still something to worry about. And really the only hope there for most of us is that the vendors do a good job.

This past week I've been playing around with the new security granularity of SQL Server 2005 and it's been pretty impressive. Getting too granular can allow you to shoot yourself in the foot, but they seem to have given us the tools and covered the bases well with regards to securing the product.

Now it's mainly up to us to develop and implement some best practices.

In particular their "malicious software tools" - ?!?!?

Any vendor that excludes 'GAIN' (formerly Gator) from the category of adware/spyware/malware should be shot multiple times <period>

Since MS announced this a while back, we have switched to 'Spybot'.

    SET RANT_MODE OFF

As for 'security', well, my grandfather once said "Locks only keep honest people out"
