Problems with Sophos installing MSDE

  • I have had to rebuild my machine and have re-installed SQL server 2000 as usual (I thought). I have reloaded various dabases and all is well. I am now re-installing Sophos which starts by installing MSDE. I get the error: This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator. This happens no matter what I try.

I assume there is some SQL server setting I need to change but I cannot work it out.

  • You get the error: "This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator."

Before doing anything I'd talk to the Windows Admins and see if they are applying/updating AD group policy. If this is the case, then they may have to 'tweak' it a bit. We presently are upgrading Win 2K Pro workstations to XP SP2 in our environment and pushing out 'group policy' at the same time. We've also run into some issues as well.

  • Dear Rudy.

It is much simpler than that. I AM the administrator (and only user) of a win2000 Adv server box. I have made no changes that I am aware of, to any policies, group or otherwise.

Any advise, or questions of things to check will be much appreciated.

    kind regards

  • Have you checked the SQL setup log? I think it's sqlstp.log or something like that in your Windows folder. Run setup and then check for recent files and you should see it. This might clue you in.

  • I remember the filename now (thanks Steve) ... It's sqlstpx.log where x is a number starting with zero and incremented for each failure.

I also remember an issue with file permissions as well. Have you tried to copy the contents of the installation CD to a disk folder and execute it from there ? If it fails again, you may have to change the permissions on the disk copy and remove the 'read only' attributes from everything.
