NEWBIE BI Question

  • I am looking to get a jump start to my career. Currently the only skill sets i feel that I have going for me is i can work with Excel very good i creating complex formulas and i have some background knowledge in SQL. I want to start learning more about BI tools and want to find the best place to learn from. I graduated college two years ago and actually feel behind the times now when it comes to all this software. My goals are not to become just an IT/Programmer but someone with more influence on how data should be constructed. What applications would you suggest i know and perquisites for learning.

    Thank you

  • If you want to learn BI, I'd start with some of the books out there on the technologies. Work on SSRS, SSIS, learn some of the ways in which the technologies work.

There are all types of resources when you pick a technology, but the hot ones in SQL Server seem to be those areas.

  • I think that one of the keys here is that you want to be able to dp the following...

My goals are not to become just an IT/Programmer but someone with more influence on how data should be constructed

There's only one way to do that... learn more about databases and how they work behind the scenes. With that in mind, here are some standard recommendations many of us make to start the process of learning whether it's for becoming a DBA or a BI Ninja. I consider Step 1 in the following article to be absolutely essential.

    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/DBA/68526/

The reason I consider it essential is this... consider the sensation of hot and cold. If someone where raised in a perfect 70o environment, you could certainly describe how hot and cold felt to you but they still wouldn't have a clue as to how it really felt unless they were to experience it for themselves. "Book Smarts" only go so far.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
