Moving W2000 Clustered SQL to W2003 Cluster

  • We have plans to move our current W2000 2 node SQL Cluster with SAN to a blade environment and have also purchased new disk.  We will be installing W2003 on the new servers and will cluster 2 SQL nodes.  We would like to keep the same SQL instance names and virtual names.  Is there a migration sequence that would allow us to reuse these identical names on the new set-up?  Also, is there a documented procedure we could reference on moving clustered SQL completely from one server to another.  Just want to make sure we are not overlooking any steps in the migration.  Also interested in info on moving clustered analysis services and cubes to the new servers/SAN.

  • Hello Marilyn,

This is not exactly what you want but there is an interesting article in the september/october issue of SQL Server central magazine about a cluster migration from Win2000 to Win2003 written by Brian Kelly. The article's title is : CLustering the DTC in 2003.

    Hope it will help you.

  • Where can I find a copy of the article?

  • The easy way is to build the new cluster along side the existing cluster (with totally new names of course). Then after things have been switched (short for moving all the databases/users/etc to the new cluster) you simple update DNS adding aliases. We've done this twice already this year without a hiccup !
