Mission Critical Deployments

It seems to me that, even in the event of a catastrophic computer system failure, an airplane should still be functional enough to make an emergency landing under manual control.

Seems that way to me too but there are no longer physical connections between the pilot controls and the control surfaces. They would have to add physical hydraulic servo control overrides directly to the hydraulic systems, which is a point of failure in themselves.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

Even if the connection between controls and hydraulics are wired, it should not necessarily have to be software dependent. Jumbo jets predate commercial micro computers. Maybe it's time to take a step back.

    Boy, I'd hope so.

  • Testing of installation is often skipped or, rather, descoped to a level well below proving a deployment.

This is not a good place to be and will not change until management in some form are held responsible.
