Memory

  • Pace Douglas Adams, the answer probably ought to have been 42.

  • I'm not even going to say anything....

    Mel. 😎

  • Like others, I would assume the full product unless express edition was explicitly stated. At least the answers didn't include the minimum 1 GB and recommended 4 GB. Granted, I wouldn't even consider installing a database on a machine with only 4 GB.

Gotta agree. Without an edition being stated, the answers change. Just saying SQL Server, I would assume the full product, then the minimum is 1gb, but the recommended is 4gb. And you used recommended on purpose to avoid the easy minimums answer.

  • They shouldn't count SQL Express. I can count - on one hand - the amount of times SQL express is used in a production environment. If it's SQL - the minimum is 1 GB, the recommended minimum is 4 GB. Just a badly worded question IMHO. I want my darn point!!

  • The CORRECT answer is "None of the above". SQL Server 2012 is full edition. SQL Server 2012 EXPRESS is a whole other animal. Example: I'll sell you licenses for SQL Server 2012 for $100 per core. When you buy it, can I deliver SQL Server 2012 Express instead? 😀

    Excellent point!

  • Yes, poorly worded. As for getting points back? You didn't lose any points, you just didn't get any for a correct answer. Anyway, the points don't really mean much outside of SSC so why worry about them?

    SSC is life. 😎

  • Took a shot at what I guessed was the most likely answer among them and got lucky.

I know - I said that tongue and cheek. But I do take the time to look this up with the expectation that it'll make me a better admin. When I see question like that it I'm disappointed. But such is life.

Well, one thing to remember is that the people that are taking the time to write QotD are learning as well. It is better to provide positive criticism rather than bashing them for writing poorly written questions.

It isn't easy to write these questions, I know having written a few myself. It is a learning experience even for highly experienced DBA/Developers.

I think that once again, the moderators are asleep on the job!

Did you mean to say "once again"?

    Maybe "as always" fits?

It was obvious to me what the wanted answer was, but I have been coming here for a while.

If you asked the question: "What is recommended memory requirement for SQL Server 2012?",

why is the link that you provided go to the web page titled "Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2014"?

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.110).aspx

Maybe he did not know if you do not specify the version in the URL it shows the page for the latest version.
