  • A good question.

What is the difference between 8 and 9?

    8 Password mismatch

    9 Invalid password

  • A very good question, indeed! My BOL (September 2007) says:

    8 The password is incorrect.

    9 Password is not valid.

  • bitbucket,

Can you explain the difference between those two terms? I Google'd about, but all I found is the source that you cited.

In the case of "password mismatch" what action should be taken, if any?

This QOD raises more questions than it answers.

    8 Password mismatch

    9 Invalid password

  • I have a SQL 2008 named instance installed.

I am able to login through sa login from the server and from other servers as well.

But the customer is not able to connect to the server, even though he is locally connected to the server through RDP and trying to use the sa credentials.

    This is the error message:

    Message

Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Password did not match that for the login provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

    Message

    Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 8.

same credentials are working when I am trying from other servers.
