Is GenAI Coming Faster Than You Think?

  • I love how people tip-toe around this subject.  Oh... it's not going to eliminate DBA jobs... we'll just be able to get along with 3 people instead of 5 to 10.

Sorry but that's eliminating DBA jobs, not by function, but by people doing them.  Which ever way you look at it, humans will lose their jobs just as humans on automotive assembly lines lost their jobs.

Heh... my prediction is that, in the future, you won't have to chose between the Red Pill or the Blue Pill.  There won't be a choice nor even a pill.  The people that provide the AI will make sure of that.

________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

  • I see Bill Gates is saying that we'll be down to a 2 day week within 10 years and almost all jobs will be eliminated.

I have a friend whose business was travel writing.  The business has survived and thrived for 15 years.  Almost overnight Gen-AI has put her company out of business.  Yes, when Gen-AI makes some mistakes it makes some absolute howlers but an awful lot of what it is being used for is to collate and reassemble information.  With guard rails it can do that , it is doing it, it has done it.

My concern with Bill Gates's statement is two fold, both based on him being correct.

    • Work has a societal function, not just economic.
    • The hubris of clever people

The saying "don't meet your heroes" is because doing so will likely disappoint. On top of the very real attributes our heroes demonstrate we project a whole raft of qualities and skills that we wish our idols to have.  There are a lot of bright minds running Silicon Valley who are their own heroes.  They are supreme in their field, rewarded with money and power that shields them from the consequences of what they are doing.  Supremacy in one field does not guarantee supremacy in another.

Technology is racing ahead of ethical and economic thought.

  • It will, all the new students basically grow up with GenAI,

  • AI might eliminate the need for entry level DBAs, but I think most senior level DBAs (augmented by AI) will retire on schedule doing what we're currently doing.

  • Going down to a 2 day week sounds lovely in theory. In practice, will our employers pay us the same for 2 days as they do now for 5? I doubt it somehow. I certainly couldn't maintain a comfortalbe lifestyle on 2/5 of my salary.

  • How many travel agents do you think there are in this age of Expedia/Hotels.com/Priceline, etc.?

Take a guess? More or less than 2010?

It's more. While there have been ups and downs, and there are less than there were in the 2000 ish time frame, it's been growing.

There is a ton of work out there. There will be DBA jobs, but not as many. Part of this is AI for sure. Part of this is companies trying to absorb the job into others, maybe with AI, maybe just letting sysadmins or devs manage dbs (as well as they can).

GenAI is impacting the world for sure. I don't think it's going to eliminate the DBA, but it will reduce the need. and it will certainly reduce the need for as many people who aren't really good at their jobs.

  • Saw AI at FabCon this week. It can be helpful, but it is nothing to worry about yet. Unless everything you develop can be done by a consultant who knows nothing about your company. Then you are in trouble.
