How to display data from a SQL Server DB within a SharePoint - SharePortal Site

  • SQL Server Version: 2005

    SharePoint Version: 2003 & 2007 (MOSS edition)

This is more of a SharePoint question but since the data source is SQL Server and because I have seen prior posts in these forums about SharePoint I figured I'd give it a shot since I don't know of any good SharePoint specific User Forums that I personally know of or that have been recomended by a trusted source.

    In brief:

Is there a way within a SharePoint site (either 2003 or 2007) to present to the user a report that is not static so that each time the page is refreshed or viewed the query behind the report is executed?

    In Detail:

I'm trying to determine what is the easiest way to provide within a SharePoint site, the results of a view or a query that is live so that each time the page is visited the data is updated. I have some experience with SharePoint but not with what is basically Reporting. We are using SharePoint Portal 2003 and are testing with SharePoint 2007 MOSS.

I've looked thru the webparts in both of tehs SharePoint setups and there is no Reporting web part that I can see. I would think that because of the fact that SharePoint uses SQL Server as a data store that Reporting in SHarePoint from SQL Server would at least be integrated if not easy to do for at least basic queries.

The 2007 SharePoint does have some web parts (Business Data ...) that appear to be candidates for something like this but I haven't inestigated them in detail. I want to avoid spending a lot of time spinning my wheels on what may not be the best option for what I'm trying to do.

If someone can just point me in the right direction I'm happy to go thru all the details myself I just need to know where to start.

    Thank You

    Kindest Regards,

  • I don't know if this helps, but you can integrate Reporting Services with SharePoint. You would then use Reporting Services Reports to provide the integration you are looking to achieve.

We are looking at doing this, but haven't progressed to that point at this time.
