Get Date & DateName Help - newbie questions.

  • No, he didn't.  But I think he noticed, as his experimenting used 14 instead of 21.  And he did indicate that my solution was slick, and simplier than what he originally tried to use.

Again I gave him something based on what he wrote, and did it during a break at work (so not much time to really analyze my own work).  If someone takes what we provide as gospel and without testing and validating in thier own environment, are we responsible for the outcome?  What we provide is as is no guarantees.  The user asking for help has to accept resposibility for the work and make sure it is what they are looking for.

  • Good teachers are always responsible for the outcome...

  • Good teachers make themselves unnecessary by helping the student to learn without having to hold thier hand all the time.  I would prefer to have someone show me the way, even if it isn't quite right, by showing me the PRINCIPLE behind getting to the right answer, as I can do 100's of tasks with a few principles, but only a few tasks if shown how to do a few tasks.

The best teacher I had was my first supervisor I had in the Air Force 27 years ago while stationed in England.  He taught me how to read the support manuals to find the answers I sought for problems, and forced me to find them solution and tell him what I had to do to fix the problem.  After a few months, I only went to him when I had problems with the solution.  I became one of the best computer operators in the department because of his guidance.  Others in the department respected my decisions and looked to me when there were problems.  All this, and I was the lowest ranking person in the shop.

  • I agree that good teachers work themselves out of a job with their students... the point is that you misread the question and provided an incorrect answer.  Thank you for correcting the answer.

  • The answer was wrong, yes, but the principle behind it was correct.  The rest is up to the user.

  • I'm thinking that just a little irresponsible on your part.  Good night, Lynn.

  • OK. I'm back! (the original poster)  I couldn’t get to a computer last night and I didn't mean to cause such a discussion on this post.  Lynn gave me EXACTLY what I originally wanted even though I wasn’t very clear.  In fact, I needed a solution for many different time frames not just 3 weeks.  I figured, why muddy the waters, just ask for 3 weeks and modify it for 6, 10, etc.

Thanks for everyone’s help (especially Lynn’s).
