Forums on your Resume/CV

  • In my presentation this past weekend in Florida, someone asked if I thought recruiters or HR people would look over forum postings when considering a candidate for a job. My response was I didn't think it was likely unless someone had put in on their resume.

I'm wondering if you regulars agree, or if you would put your efforts here or elsewher on your resume? Would you call them out in an interview?

    I have, as an FYI.

I absolutely make a point of it. I also have a couple of favorite posts I provide links to as well as the articles I've written. When people take a look, they suddenly don't care how many letters my competition has behind their name. 😛

During my last interview, I didn't have to do even that... my potential employer Googled me. I later found out that other candidates for the position I was going for normally have to go through group interviews and a whole swath of tests... I had an hour long interview, no tests, and was asked if I could start the following Monday. They turned out to be a great bunch of folks, as well.

Charmed life I lead partially due to SSC. Thanks for keeping it going, Steve.

  • If someone I was considering noted that they posted on forum X, you can bet that I would check it out to see what they are posting. I've never googled a candidate. Chances are here that I wouldn't find anything.

I haven't done any work on my CV since I started seriously posting on forums (got the current job because one of the senior consultants knew me), but when I do I'll add in some of the articles that I've written and mention the forums that I post on.

  • I never put it on my resume, but if the subject of favorite sites/forums comes up during the interview, I tell them which forums I use and I let them know that where they can see my questions or answers. Lately I've done also some presentations in our local SQL Server user group, so I can also refer them to the sites that have those presentations, but again I'll might do it at the interview but I won't mention it on my resume.

  • Just so you know, I've had about 6 or 7 interviews since SSC started (none in years) and I called this out in every one. I also used to answer questions for someone else years ago, not BrainBench, but a precursor to Lockergnome, where I got paid like $25 a month to do it, I would mention it.

In all cases, it didn't eliminate an interview like Jeff, in fact in some cases it ended up being a challenge for the guys interviewing me to "stump" me. A few even came in with books, but it was all in fun, and I got offered jobs almost every time.

I'd say it's a good thing to mention, and note on your resume, or bring up in your interview. It shows a lot of what you think, how you work, etc.

  • The first thing I do when someone sends a resume for a job is to look online for their background. If I do find something, then I will look at it deeper and try to gauge the knowledge base.

Chances are here that I wouldn't find anything.

And yet you'd find you. Maybe you should reconsider that? I even found myself, and I don't know nuthin'. 😉

Last interview I did was just over a year ago. Don't expect to do any more any time soon.

Someday I'll learn how to write English that actually makes sense. What I was trying to say was that you could potentially find someone you were interviewing in SA by googling, because I could find you, and you're brilliant. So maybe you should consider googling folks just to see.

Or, I misunderstood what you meant, and am just confusing things.

  • I have mention of it in my resume. It was ignored by one manager, and helped me get interviewed by two others. Both of those commented that reading through some of my posts here, specifically answers I've given to help people out, really demonstrated what they were looking for. (In one case, it would have been a great job, but the pay scale wasn't what I need for my current financial situation, so SSC would theoretically have helped me land that job if I'd accepted the offer.)

S'pose that's better than 'ogle-ing' them. Do they have trouble seeing the PC screen with goggles on? 😛 😎

As a manager at my company, I cannot (and would not) even joke about that. In fact, I cannot even be in this conversation. Later, ...

http://www.goggle.com is apparently a dating agency. Guess that's kind of "search" related...
