I was reviewing this document http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993.aspx to confirm we could get by with Standard Edition for an upcoming project when I made this unpleasant discovery on the next to last page.
If this is correct, MySQL just got a lot more attractive.

It appears that is a documentation error, and that database mail is fully supported on SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition 64-bit

We had this discussion in another thread recently. And yes, the end result (with different documentation) was that it was a documentation error.
