Data Warehouse Toolkit meets Star Schema: The Complete Reference

  • Is there a good syllabus for reading these two together? (Yes, it's called the table of contents!)

Just wondering because Kimball's book is super high level, and Adamson's book is much more detailed. Maybe I'll just have to put it all in my book report. LOL

  • Kinda to answer my own question... I'd definitely recommend reading Star Schema: The Complete Reference before reading Data Warehouse Toolkit. Complete Reference starts from a much less theoretical place, so it's a lot easier to understand. They're both really good books - they're sort of complementary. More later with my book report. <g>

I am such a chucklehead! If you read Star Schema: The Complete Reference, at the end of each chapter is a note on what the corresponding chapter of Data Warehouse Toolkit you should read.

  • Myself, I'd recommend reading either the Articles & Design Tips (DecisionWorks.com) or at Articles & Design Tips (KimballGroup.com)  which were collected in a 2nd edition in early 2016 in The Kimball Group Reader . By the way, today (16 Feb 2026) is the 30th anniversary (to the day) of the original publication of The Data Warehouse Toolkit in 1996. In some ways it is my favorite since the basics of dimensional modeling haven't changed. It is a quick read. The original book included a CD-ROM with VBA/Access code for building simple reports from a "star join schema".

  • Funnily enough, I have that book too. Guess I should be brave and actually open it!
