    Don't like your answer today. The question was which of these is a poor purchasing decision for a dedicated SQL Server machine?
    Not as the answer suggests what is the limitation for SQL Server standard edition. Learnt something new though.

    Have  had to make calls in this regard before (weighing costs for different editions of SQL vv the required hardware, etc.)

    I was thinking the licensing would penalize high core count like in enterprise edition. Now i know.
