comparison tools

  • Hi all,

Not sure if this is a good place to post this bt here goes. I'm fairly new and have an environment with multiple DB's to test. We are looking for some good auditing and comparison tools. Hit Google and saw some companies. I was hoping to get user feedback in here before talking to the sales people.

Anyone ever use DBGhost? What advantages do they have over Red-Gates SQLCompare or Datacompare? How about ApexSQL? They seem to have a lot of tools for differnt uses. Has anyone tried out their Diff product? If so what are the advantages over DBGhost or Red-Gate? I saw OmniAudit from Krell. Anyone have experience with them and their advnatages? Thanks for any feedback

  • We have reviews up of both RedGate and Apex compare tools, plus one from AdeptSQL. Worth looking at. Havent tried the auditing tools.

  • One of these days I have to write the review. I find that the methods in AdeptSQL (http://www.adeptsql.com) and ApexSQL (http://www.apexsql.com) are faster than RedGate (http://www.red-gate.com). I did during one test ran into and issue with APexSQL that required a reinstall to correct.

  • Antares post might refer to Red Gate's v2.0x tools, the version 3.0x tools have a very significant speed improvement (between 50 and 100 times faster).

We think our tools are worth evaluating because they are very simple to use and understand and have very high quality scripts.

One of the advantages of being the market leader (7,000 customers and 100,000 users) and having done this for much longer is that we've got many more test cases than the people who've recently started copying us. This makes the chances of the tools working on your configuration much higher.

You can try them out at http://www.red-gate.com/sql/summary.htm

    Cheers,

Simon Galbraith (from Red Gate Software)

  • Used sqlcompare and datacompare from redgate for some years now, relatively low cost tool that should be in every dba's toolkit - in terms of ROI it'll save you so much in time.

The other very useful tool is log explorer from lumigent, this allows you to view the transaction logs and see who did what. It'll also allow you to find such things as deferred updates.

  • Thanks for the info. What about DBGhost? How do they stack up? Thanks.

  • Goto

    http://www.sql-server-performance.com/vg_database_comparison_sp.asp

for a stored procedure which will do comparison!

    Linto

  • Red-Gate SQL Compare is a great tool for such a great price, I agree that there are other tools in the same catagories as SQL Compare - Data Compare but not anywhere close to the base licensing cost of Red-Gates product... (no I don't work for Red-Gate)... Linto mentions a proc that will do a comparison which is nice, but the sql compare is simple and allows you to review (like VSS and other Tools -limited) the code line by line... It is also a bit flakey on spaces and line breaks

  • I just heard that Xpressapps is coming out with a diff tool.  Based on strength of their IDE we’re going to wait and see the beta before we upgrade or buy another tool.  Has anybody heard anymore on it?

    Cheers,

    JW

  • Haven't heard anymore about functionality, but Specapps say that SQL diff in mssqlXpress will be introduced in a few weeks.

  • I have found DB Ghost from Innovartis http://www.dbghost.com to be an excellent database change management & comparison tool.  It integrates with Visual Source Safe & compares schema & data within the one tool.  It is a reliable & easy to use utility with nice features like command-line interface & object dependency resolution.

The management of our version control for database development has been improved out of sight.  But DB Ghost cannot really be compared with the likes of Red-Gate because it is more than just a SQL diff tool.
