can add sql2008 r2 instance to sql2014 cluster

  • the client currently has a sql2014 cluster window 2012

and wants to add a sql2008 r2 instance for some legacy

  • No. You can add a database on SQL 2014 in R2 compatability mode, but not a SQL 2008 R2 instance.

The format for databases and logs has changed.

  • so what they are saying is that if you run the r2 software and install it on different drives that should work

  • I would not install 2008 on top of 2014. You can go forward but not reverse. You risk blowing up your 2014 install if you install 2008 on top.

  • this is a non critical box but the client has an app that wont work in 2014

so i offered compatibility mode but that was a turned down

I am sure that we can rebuild the 2014 if we hose it

    will it work

  • I have never tested it to know. If you install 2008 first and then 2014, I can tell you that would work.

  • so the answer is to uninstall 2014 cluster

    install 2008r2 cluster

    install 2014 cluster

  • That would be the safest way to do it.
