Best online training for SQL Server Certifications

  • Hey guys, I am working for a company that doesnt mind spending money on TRAINING. Finally! In your opinions, what is the best resource for instructor led online training OR pace yourself online training/class.

Going for Sql Server 2005 MCITP certs. I'm getting conflicting info, can you clarify what is the 'premier' cert for Sql Server?

    Thanks for your expertise

  • If, by "premier" you mean highest qualification, then for SQL Server that is an MCITP. But first you have to pass the MCTS.

I've read the "MCTS SQL Server 2005: Implementation and Maintenance Self-Paced Training Kit" from Microsoft several times, but don't think it has enough depth in some areas for the exam. I'm waiting for the 2008 edition to come out in late January before attempting the exam as 2008 has two MCTS exams instead of one.

  • The Database Master is probably the premier one, but not many people will do that.

What are you looking to learn and where are you?

  • I was on a phone interview and was discussing certs and I said I wanted my MCITP and the interview said that was not all of them for SQL Server which surpised me. I went back and looked on Microsoft's site and it said MCITP was the "premier" cert for SQL Server 2005 (and I guess 2008 in Jan.) So I thought I would ask you guys what the deal was. What is Database Master's criteria (not that I'm there yet Steve but am curious).

I'm in Louisiana (Baton Rouge) and want to get my MCITP after MCTS. There are two of us in this office going for training and certs but thought I'd ask opinions here before making a recommendation to spend the employers money. I'd much prefer online instructor led training but I dont see any available with a quick google search so just online would be fine. When it comes to the MCITP I'd like to do a boot camp type training after doing some online studying.

I know I dont NEED online training but studying on my own is most difficult at home with all of my kids wanting some attention. Poor me, I'm missed when I'm at work and get mugged by the brats when I get home. They love their daddy but makes me feel guilty to isolate and study and see the sad eyes. Prefer to do online at lunch/before/after work and when I have some unallocated time (lol). Classroom training in Baton Rouge is not out of the question either but is usually expensive and dont want to spend it on the MCTS as the MCITP "camp" will be expensive....stretching my continuing education budget.

Just want the best solution for the money.

    Thanks!

quoting Steve "What are you looking to learn"

I am not just wanting to pass a test but to really learn the material to be a better DBA. Not interested in sites just providing answers.

  • The Masters is a new one for SQL Server 2008. In order to get that, you need to pass MCITP SQL Server 2008 Database Developer and MCITP SQL Server 2008 Database Administrator.

The first level of qualification you need is an MCTS. The question is really, which one? I didn't make it very clear in my original response, but these are your options:-

MCTS SQL Server 2005 Implementation and Maintenance

MCTS SQL Server 2008 Database Administrator

MCTS SQL Server 2008 Database Developer

There is also a Business Intelligence MCTS for 2005 and 2008. I think all the MCTS exams are available to take now, but I'm making a decision to look at 2008 certification and the Training Kit for the Database Administrator comes out in January, the Developer one in March.
