Best Bookstores List

  • In the interests of making this a searchable topic (because who can find anything on The Thread after the pages have passed by on another topic), here's a separate list of bookstores with links for anyone who happens to be travelling and looking for a good bookstore.

Feel free to quote the below list and add your own bookstores. Online bookstores are also acceptable...

  • There's a good second hand bookshop in Alnwick, Northumbria - "Barter Books".

Take your old, unwanted stuff, drop it off at the desk, go for a wander round, have a coffee and cake, wander some more, lug your purchases back to the desk and find a credit note waiting. Of course, you may also find your old books also waiting if they were deemed to be particularly unsellable...

Oh, and you can take your dog in too.

  • The original store is gone, though the business still exists (wonder what they look like now). In the early 90s, this was pure heaven. Four stories of basically every book in print, more than likely, in Denver. I haven't been to Denver in over 20 years but I would go out of my way to stop here.

  • If you ever end up in Columbus, OH (where I live), this is the nicest bookstore in town. It's not where you go to find a specific book, but the ambiance makes for excellent browsing:

  • Any good bookshops in London? (for next time I visit)

  • Hey, let's not forgot about Barnes & Noble! There are a handful here in Atlanta, and also a handful in Jackson FL, Toronto, and London too.

  • If you ever find yourself in the Albany, NY area, I suggest The Book House. I also recommend Northshire, which has locations in Saratoga Springs, NY and Manchester, VT.

Any good bookshops in London? (for next time I visit)

Foyles Tottenham Court Road / Charing Cross Road

There is also a good looking second hand book shop on Charing Cross Road very near to Leicester Square tube station. But I've never been in all the times I've walked by it !

Also the Waterstones near UCL. Is pretty good. It's near Euston Station.

84 Charing Cross Road? As in the book by Helene Hanff? It's now a McD's... but, yes, I believe there is another 2nd hand bookshop nearby...

Oh I was there about a month ago, but it was absolutely pelting it down with rain, so I wasn't paying much attention as I was trying to get out of the rain. It is / was near the cafe 1882 there.
