Are the posted questions getting worse?

But maybe, just maybe, two european swallows flew to Mauritius, procurred a coconut and presented it to two african swallows. That solves that.

Now if we only knew the avg air speed velocity of those swallows.

45-50 miles per hour, per the American Audubon Society. (72-80 kph)

    African or European?

  • Guys

Interesting points! Im an MD of a Financial Services Company and in my spare(?) time write programs in VB.net that access SQL Workgroup. I wouldn't know one end of MSSQL from the other-all those things that I can't even pronounce. I wouldn't even be able to ask a question sensibly. What I would do however, if I needed to, would be to learn and not pick other people's brains except perhaps at the very beginning of the learning process (stupid questions, not appreciating erudite answers etc) and at the end (sensible questions, good discussions and mutual help). Perhaps the original post refers to the first category who should move on quickly if they put in the effort? I taught myself to program in VB.net (probably very badly by pro standards!) without pestering people and I have noticed that even I can now answer some of the questions. There is plenty of written help available to get started but, hey, if I pick someone's brain I don't need to use my own! I do hope these people are not getting paid for this type of activity. Anyway, I read the forums without understanding any of it-but I admire the way you guys are always willing to help.

  • Ken,

I think the original point of this thread was that it seems like people aren't even putting the effort in to find the answer themselves, but are using forums like free consulting. No one minds helping someone who has shown that they made an effort to find out for themselves and either couldn't find the answer or didn't understand what they found. The issue is people who ask what a JOIN is without making an effort to use google/bing or BOL to find out for themselves.

  • Nice post Ken. I can relate.

Personally, I do prefer the questioner to make some effort - if only so I can understand the request.

I'm not above writing the test data myself on occasion - after all this is not an entirely altruistic pursuit - I get a lot out of thinking about the many and varied posted questions...

It's a shame they're not doing this with a laden swallow...

Yes, but African swallows are non-migratory.

They are? Or is that a Monty Python reference?

    Ouch! That's just embarrassing.

Too bad you can't use this "technology" in an office environment.

(edit: forum bug, caused me to quote the wrong post, .. fixed now.)

Because birds won't fly anywhere near CAT-5.

No it isnt, Gail made some money by the sounds of it.

No I didn't. No one local was willing to bet that the pigeon would lose.

Let's put it this way. The cheapest and fastest way for me to get a 4GB DB backup to a colleague in Cape Town (1300 km away) is to burn it to DVD, drive down to the local postal courier's office and ship it down (costs around R120).

Ok, now you have me a little more curious about your whereabouts. I used to live in Madagascar and La Reunion ('95) with a few visits to Durban. I had some friends in Cape Town and Johannesburg. So my curiosity is if you live close to Durban or somewhere else.

Just for a little perspective on the relative size of the world.
