Fish is not considered meat, so it's allowed. For strange reasons. Some suggest it's because the Pope at the time had ties to the fishing industry, and as we all know, religions aren't always 100% uncorrupt, especially when young. It could just as likely have biblical reasons though. I generally try to avoid fish too, because obviously fish is still a form of meat.A lot of the ancient Biblical communities were fishing communities. I think that might have had something to do with it. Plus all that religious miracle stuff with the fish and forty loaves of bread and the "be fishers of men" type stuff. Fish do have a holy meaning in Catholicism. So it makes sense to me that it would be allowed.
That's basically what I was thinking of with "biblical reasons". What you mentioned makes sense, but it always feels silly excluding fish from meat. We need to come up with a fancy new term for a diet that excludes all flesh except seadfood - or publicize it if it already exists.
Vegafishitarian just doesn't flow well.

The idea is to keep it to a specific day and schedule for the discipline and sacrifice - if you did it any day, it would just be a convenience thing. Is it that hard to do? No, not really. The problem is remembering to do it every week and remembering to avoid meat when all your friends want to go get a hamburger on Friday. If I'm eating at home, no big deal, because its planned for.
I'm not Catholic so I won't try to correct anything about Catholic practices, but I can say with pretty high confidence that there is nothing in the Bible, New Testament, there are no dietary restrictions mandated (being Protestant we don't include the apocryphal books that are included in Catholic Bible, I'm not making commentary what should or shouldn't be considered the Bible, just qualifying). There are principles about sacrifice and taking time for fasting and prayer. Also, if you do go through the dietary restrictions that are given to the Jews in the Old Testament, and I'm not an expert on this, I believe following them would probably lead to a healthier diet. Of course that would mean giving up some really tasty foods like bacon and pulled pork.
Yes I have read the Bible cover to cover, that doesn't mean I remember everything or know everything but dietary restrictions are things that I'd remember 😀

Don't you just love it when you go to post a question to the forums (after banking your head against a wall for several hours / days) and as you type you suddenly see the "error of your ways"?
Just happened. Three days into fixing my glorious month end monitor, trying to figure out why my CASE statement wasn't working.
As I'm typing up the post, I realize I forgot to call my method. #headdesk
Thank you, Steve, for a place where I can miraculously resolve my problems before I post about them. @=)

I guess it would depend on whether you use the strict definition of vegetarian vs. the lest strict where they really only restrict meat from mammals and will eat fish and poultry.
I could never be vegetarian or vegan because I can't stand beans, and that's where a lot of the protein comes from in those diets.

Sounds like you need to invest in a duck.
Actually, they should be standard issue for IT hires. I really need one myself.

You mean you don't ask someone to review your code and as soon as they walk to your desk and you start explaining your issue and solve the problem immediately? Happens almost daily to me.

You are certainly not alone Brandie. I can't count the times I have been typing up a question or summoning someone to my desk to look over my shoulder and in preparation a discover the problem. 😉

I was trying to avoid bugging the devs over what I knew was a stupid issue.

A couple of my clients use that method in a different form. They call it a phone handset or instant messenger (pick your platform).
They start typing the question to me and then the next message I see is nevermind I see it now (only after typing it up or explaining it).
I hope they don't realize that a rubber duck is much cheaper.

I love playing the rubber duck/naive listener, not only does it help programmers to solve the problem, it also helps me to understand their strength and weaknesses.

Worked with a guy who would talk to his dog about a code problem.
Once worked at a place with a help desk that I would go to with a question, after explaining, I would see the problem but one guy would insist he come up with an answer.

And thanks to my Medieval History classes in college I know that Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox and Lent starts 40 days before that.
Actually that's only sort of true. From first day of lent to last day of lent inclusive is always 46 days (except in the East, where there are more than 46), so lent starts 46 days before Easter.
But only 40 of those 46 days are lent - the other 6 days are Sundays, and Cristians (at least of denominations which recognise this sort of stuff) are not allowed to fast on Sunday, because every Sunday is a feast day celebrating the resurrection. That of course is the fast called Lent.
In the Roman church (and several more Western churches), there is also the liturgical season of lent (not to be confused with lent itself) which begins on the same day as lent and ends perhaps at a different time (RC church and maybe some others: sunset on Holy Thursday; some churches: Sunset on the Saturday before Easter; some other churches: the end of that Saturday (which might be midnight local time or midnight bureaucratic time); and maybe more variants. Anyway that means that the RC lent liturgical season is 44 days long.
In the East (Greek Orthodox and so on) Saturday is also a day which is not to be included in the lent fast, so they have to add more than another week to get the count up to 40: the count of fast days always has to be 40, ever since somwhere around 1200 years ago (and in theory before that: I think it was St Gregory who pointed out about 1400 years ago that western lent then had only 36 fast days, so it didn't have the required 40, and it then took a couple of hundred years for anything to be done church-wide about it).
(I tend to know a bit of this stuff despite it not being my thing because I'm married to a qualified theology teacher)
